Intraocular Lens (IOL) Options

IOL = Intraocular Lens Implant. At Ajax Ophthalmology Associates, we offer a range of advanced intraocular lens (IOL) options to help you achieve the best possible vision after cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange.

An intraocular lens is a clear, artificial lens that replaces your eye’s natural lens once it becomes cloudy from cataracts. Choosing the right IOL is an important step in your treatment, as it determines how well you see at different distances after surgery.

Types of Intraocular Lenses

1. Monofocal (Single Distance) IOLs

a. OHIP or Spherical IOLs are clear implants that provide adequate vision.

b. “Aspheric” IOLs or more modern IOLs provide higher contrast vision, particularly noticeable in dim lighting or foggy conditions.

Advanced Technology IOLs
(Lenses Designed to Reduce the Need for Glasses or Contacts):

2. Toric IOLs (Astigmatism Correction)

A monofocal lens that also corrects astigmatism to reduce need for glasses or contacts at a single viewing distance. Your eye measurements completed in the office will determine whether you have significant astigmatism and provide the best options for addressing it.

3. Extended Range of Vision Lens (Distance to Intermediate)

Previously referred to as extended depth of focus lenses, these lenses aim to improve the range of clear vision without glasses to provide help at intermediate distances, such as computer use, cooking, dashboard when driving. Examples include the Tennis Puresee IOL, the Alcon Vivity IOL, and Bausch and Lomb Aspire IOL.

4. Full Range of Vision lens (Distance to Near)

Previously referred to as multifocal lenses, these lenses aim to improve the range of clear vision without glasses for distance, intermediate and near viewing distances, leading to a significant reduction in glasses dependence in most cases. Examples include the Alcon Panoptix Pro IOL, the Tecnis Odyssey IOL, and the Bausch and Lomb Envy IOL.

At our clinic, we offer many full range of vision lenses such as Panoptix Pro (Alcon), Odyssey (Johnson and Johnson), Envy (Bausch and Lomb);  EROV lenses: Tecnis Puresee IOL, Alcon Vivity IOL, Aspire (Bausch and Lomb).

Choosing the Right IOL

Selecting the most suitable lens depends on your individual vision goals, lifestyle, and eye health. During your consultation, our team will assess your eyes and discuss:

  • Your daily visual needs (reading, driving, screen use)
  • Desire for reduced dependence on glasses
  • Presence of astigmatism or other eye conditions
  • Suitability for advanced lens technologies
