Understanding The Retina

What is the Retina?

The retina is the thin, light-sensitive layer located at the back of the eye. It plays a crucial role in vision by converting light into signals that are sent to the brain.

When the retina becomes damaged or develops disease, vision may become blurred, distorted, or reduced. Certain retinal conditions require specialized evaluation and treatment by a retina specialist to preserve vision and prevent permanent vision loss.

Common Signs & Symptoms

Retinal diseases can develop gradually or appear suddenly. If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should seek prompt evaluation by an Ophthalmologist:

  • Sudden appearance of floaters (spots or shapes drifting in your vision)
  • Flashes of light that persist
  • A dark curtain or shadow moving across your vision
  • Sudden loss or decrease in vision
  • Distorted or blurred central vision

Note: These symptoms may indicate a retinal condition that requires urgent assessment and treatment.

Advanced Treatment Options

Retina Treatments at AOA

Our clinic provides a range of modern retinal treatments and procedures tailored to each patient’s condition.

Vitrectomy (Retinal Surgery)

Vitrectomy (Retinal Surgery)

During this procedure, the surgeon removes the vitreous gel inside the eye to access and treat the retina safely.

  • Retinal detachment
  • Epiretinal membrane
  • Dislocated lens or retained cataract fragments
  • Macular hole
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Severe floaters affecting quality of life
  • Vitreous Hemorrhage and Endophthalmitis

During surgery, the retina may be treated with laser, membrane removal, or reattachment techniques. In some cases, an air, gas, or oil bubble is placed inside the eye to support healing.

Laser Treatment for Retinal Tears

Laser retinopexy is a common procedure used to treat retinal tears. The laser seals the retina around the tear and helps reduce the risk of retinal detachment.

The procedure is typically performed in clinic using numbing drops and usually takes only a short time to complete.

Intravitreal Eye Injections

Intravitreal injections deliver medication directly into the eye to treat retinal diseases.

  • Diabetic eye disease
  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Retinal vein occlusion

These injections help preserve vision and may require a series of treatments depending on the condition being treated.

Pneumatic Retinopexy

In some cases, a retinal detachment can be repaired by injecting a gas bubble (pneumatic) into the eye followed by laser treatment to seal the retina in place. This procedure is relatively non-invasive and can be performed in the Ajax clinic by the retina surgeon. It generally allows for a more rapid recovery than surgery.
