Understanding Dry Eye

What is Dry Eye Disease?

Dry Eye Disease (DED) is a multifactorial condition that occurs when your eyes either don’t produce enough tears or the tears are of poor quality and evaporate too quickly. This disruption in the tear film — which normally protects and lubricates your eyes — leads to inflammation, discomfort, and potential damage to the eye’s surface.

Our tear film consists of three layers: an outer oily (lipid) layer that prevents evaporation, a middle watery (aqueous) layer that nourishes the cornea, and an inner mucin layer that helps tears spread evenly. Problems with any of these layers can result in dry eye symptoms.

There are two main types of dry eye: Aqueous Deficient Dry Eye, where tear glands don’t produce enough tears, and Evaporative Dry Eye (Meibomian Gland Dysfunction), where the oily layer is deficient causing rapid tear evaporation. Many patients experience a combination of both types.

Common Signs & Symptoms

  • Burning or stinging sensation
  • Sensitivity to light and glare
  • Gritty or sandy feeling
  • Excessive tearing (reflex tears)
  • Blurry or fluctuating vision
  • Eye redness and irritation
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses
  • Eye fatigue, especially after screen use

Note: If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, schedule a comprehensive dry eye evaluation. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications and significantly improve your quality of life.

Dry Eye Treatments

At Ajax Ophthalmology Associates, we use advanced diagnostic technology to accurately identify the type and severity of your dry eye condition. Our comprehensive evaluation includes Lipiscan imaging to visualize meibomian glands, tear osmolarity testing, and InflammaDry testing to detect inflammatory markers.

Based on your diagnosis, we create a personalized treatment plan that may include prescription eye drops, in-office treatments like Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy or thermal pulsation treatments, punctal plugs to conserve tears, or lifestyle modifications to reduce symptoms.

For Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), which accounts for approximately 86% of dry eye cases, we offer targeted treatments to clear blocked glands and restore healthy oil flow to your tear film. Our goal is not just symptom relief, but addressing the underlying cause of your dry eye disease.
