Understanding Glaucoma

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve, usually as a result of increased pressure within the eye. This pressure buildup occurs when the fluid (aqueous humor) in your eye doesn’t drain properly. Left untreated, glaucoma can lead to permanent vision loss.

There are two main types of glaucoma: Open-angle glaucoma, the most common form, develops gradually when the eye’s drainage canals become clogged over time. Angle-closure glaucoma occurs when the iris blocks the drainage angle, causing a sudden buildup of pressure — this is a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment.

Many patients experience no symptoms during the early stages, making regular eye exams essential. Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because vision loss can occur before you notice any warning signs.

Common Signs & Symptoms

  • Gradual loss of peripheral vision
  • Tunnel vision in advanced stages
  • Severe eye pain or headache
  • Blurred or hazy vision
  • Seeing halos around lights
  • Eye redness
  • Nausea or vomiting (with acute glaucoma)
  • Sudden vision disturbances

Note: Since glaucoma often has no early symptoms, regular comprehensive eye exams are crucial — especially if you’re over 60, have a family history of glaucoma, or have diabetes. Early detection is key to preventing vision loss.

Glaucoma Treatment Options

While there is no cure for glaucoma, treatment can effectively control the condition and prevent further vision loss. At Ajax Ophthalmology Associates, we offer a comprehensive range of treatment options tailored to your specific type and severity of glaucoma.

Eye Drops are often the first line of treatment, working to reduce fluid production or increase drainage. Laser Surgery options like Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) can improve drainage and lower eye pressure with minimal side effects. For more advanced cases, Microsurgery procedures like trabeculectomy create new drainage channels.

We also offer advanced options like the Glaukos iStent®, a tiny implant placed during cataract surgery that helps manage intraocular pressure. Our goal is to find the most effective, least invasive treatment to preserve your vision and maintain your quality of life.
